Location: Remote (UK/EU)
Contract: Initial 6 months + 12 month extension Overview
We're hiring a Principal Technical Lead to drive a large-scale mainframe modernisation programme, replatforming legacy systems to AWS using Rocket Software Enterprise Server (Micro Focus). This is a strategic leadership role, owning end-to-end technical delivery across multiple workstreams from COBOL transformation through to cloud architecture, security, and DevOps.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and lead the end-to-end technical strategy for mainframe-to-AWS replatforming
- Architect and oversee all migrationworkstreams:
- COBOL compilation & runtime modernisation
- DB2 migration (z/OS → LUW)
- Shared services (MQ, Control-M, CDC, CFT)
- Security transformation (RACF → LDAP)
- Lead Rocket Enterprise Server (MFES) deployment and optimisation
- Define and maintain architecture decisions (ADRs) across the programme
- Ensure platform stability, performance, and scalability in AWS
- Oversee DevOps pipelines and automation strategy
- Manage AWS infrastructure: EC2, EBS, FSx, S3, VPC, subnets, networking
- Provide technical leadership across multi-vendor / multi-partner environments
- Present at workshops and SteerCo meetings, engaging senior stakeholders
Required Experience
- Strong experience with Rocket Software Enterprise Server (Micro Focus) (ES / EA / ED)
- Proven track record in mainframe modernisation / COBOL replatforming
- Deep expertise in DB2 (z/OS & LUW) and data migration (CDC - Precisely preferred)
- Strong AWS knowledge (Solution Architect Associate minimum)
- Experience with:
- Messaging (IBM MQ / Amazon MQ)
- Scheduling tools (Control-M)
- Security experience:
- RACF → LDAP migration
- AWS security services (KMS, Security Hub)
- Experience leading complex enterprise transformation programmes
